Residents of Naples and nearby cities spent a tense night outdoors on Thursday (13) after a night earthquake hit southern Italy, shook buildings, cutting electricity and sending residents scared to the streets.
The earthquake occurred at 1:25 am, local time, registering a magnitude of 4.4, according to the National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology of Italy (Ingv).
The tremor occurred to a shallow depth of three kilometers. The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded slightly smaller, with magnitude 4.2 and a depth of 10 km.
The epicenter was located near the coastal city of Pozzuoli, west of Naples. Local emergency teams rescued a rubble from a partially collapsed house, authorities confirmed.
Several smaller secondary tremors were felt in the region, intensifying concerns among residents.
Falls of energy were reported in parts of Naples, and many families chose to remain outdoors or inside vehicles at night, fearing more shaking.
Images from the affected areas showed damage to buildings and cars, including a broken windshield vehicle.
Although no fatality has been reported, civil protection officials launched an damage assessment operation and established a coordination center in the region.
