4 Little Trees: The technology that “reads” children’s emotions in class

The teacher and his deputy director True Light College in the Hong Kong, Ms. Tim Chu, discovered that with the help of technology she can understand feelings of his students during the lesson.

By building a new learning platform that uses artificial intelligence, it can monitor children’s emotions as they take online lessons. international media.

The software, called 4 Little Trees, created by Find Solution AI, a start up based in Hong Kong. Although the use of this technology to recognize emotions in schools has caused concern, its creator, Viola Lam, claims that with the help of software, a virtual classroom can work as well as a real one.

Students while studying on tests and homework, the software on the platform measures the muscle tone in their faces through their computer camera or tablet and identifies emotions such as happiness, sadness, anger, surprise and fear. The system also monitors how much time students need to answer the questions.

The software also records the signs and their performance history. Creates reports on their strengths, weaknesses and motivation levels and predicts their grades. The program can be tailored to each student, targeting gaps in their knowledge and offering game-style tests designed to make learning more fun.

“Students perform 10% better on exams if they have learned to use the 4 Little Trees,” said Lam, who was also a teacher and recalled finding out that some of her students only had gaps when she saw their test results.

4 Little Trees started in 2017, with funding of five million dollars, to give teachers the opportunity to better understand the difficulties faced by their students. The number of schools using it in Hong Kong has increased from 34 to 83 in the last year.
