A 4-year-old girl is hospitalized in a very serious condition at the Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital, in Gávea, South Zone of Rio de Janeiro. She was hit by a stray bullet on Wednesday night (1st).
The case took place on André Rocha Street, in Taquara, a neighborhood in the West Zone of the capital.
According to witnesses, the child was returning from school with his mother and had just bought some popcorn. Initially, she was taken to the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) in Taquara and then taken to the hospital.
Military police were called by the UPA for 4-year-old Alice Rocha, who was shot in the head during a confrontation between police and bandits. Family members at the door of Miguel Couto Hospital where the child was taken.
The Secretary of State for Military Police informed the CNN that the command of the 18th battalion, responsible for the security of the area, reinforced the policing in the place.
In a statement, the Civil Police press office confirmed that there was an exchange of fire between agents of the Police Station for Repression of Organized Criminal Actions and Special Investigations (Draco) and criminals.
Civilian police officers were checking a report of extortion in the region. During the action, one person was arrested. In addition, a pistol and a stolen car were seized.
The platform Fogo Cruzado, which monitors data on armed violence in Rio de Janeiro, reported that four children up to 11 years old were shot in the Metropolitan Region in the first six months of 2022.
According to the survey, one of them died.
In this same period last year, the numbers recorded by the entity were even higher. From January 1st to June 2nd, seven children were hit by stray bullets, three of which were killed.
