40,000 Mercedes-Benz recalled in Russia due to rusty brakes

Today, August 1, the Motor news outlet, citing its sources, reported that Rosstandart employees officially agreed with Mercedes-Benz on a voluntary recall campaign for cars in Russia. As part of this event, representatives of the automotive giant plan to recall crossovers of the GL and ML lines, as well as R-Class (W251) minivans, which were produced between 2004 and 2014, in the country. Considering the time frame of release, the volume of revocable cars turned out to be very impressive – owners of 38,000 vehicles are invited for unscheduled maintenance.

At the same time, the reason for launching the recall campaign is quite unusual and probably quite dangerous – Mercedes-Benz representatives say that a defect was found in older models of vehicles that could lead to a malfunction of the brake system. The company reported that on some cars of the brand, the vacuum brake booster may suffer from rust, which forms at the junctions of the body elements. Accordingly, the problem is quite impressive, since if such a car is used for a long time in wet weather, then the resulting corrosion will lead to a violation of the tightness of the vacuum brake booster.

At best, this will lead to a significant reduction in braking force, but Mercedes-Benz itself believes that the failure of the braking system can only occur in the worst-case scenario. However, given the chance of brake failure while driving, owners of these vehicles are advised not to use the vehicle until a proper inspection has been carried out. On the network, you can easily check the VIN code of the car with the list of revocable vehicles, and then go to the official service center, where specialists will check the current state of the vacuum booster. If everything is fine with him, then the driver will be able to move safely without repairs.

In the event that specialists find any problems with the brake system, all damaged elements will be replaced by the manufacturer completely free of charge. And, of course, it is worth noting that the recall campaign in Russia is just a drop in the ocean. Worldwide, the manufacturer will have to recall almost a million vehicles for the same reason.
