428% increase in distance learning expands access to higher education, says expert

Undergraduate courses in the area of health are the most sought after, according to the Census of Higher Education 2020, released by Inep.

Among the ten most sought-after distance courses by newcomers in 2020, four are in the health area: Pharmacy (with a growth of 416%), Biomedicine (a rise of 190%), Nutrition (70.5%) and Nursing (30.4 %), according to a survey by the Brazilian Association of Higher Education Sponsors (ABMES).

In an interview with CNN radio, in CNN Education, the CEO of ABMES, Celso Niskier, said that this trend is worldwide and “was accentuated during the pandemic.”

“The distance learning courses surpassed the face-to-face courses in 2020, we had a 13.9% decrease in this modality and a 428% increase in distance learning”, he said.

In Niskier’s assessment, this is a positive advance “because the courses have a greater capillarity, reach where the classroom cannot and provide many opportunities for access to higher education for the economically disadvantaged”.

The specialist also highlighted that “there is no 100% distance learning course in Brazil, especially in the health area”: “The distance learning subjects have a theoretical part, but with a practical part on campus, in addition, the MEC measures quality periodically and there are many courses that present better results in distance learning than in face-to-face.”

For Celso Niskier, the institutions “invested a lot in software, internet, bought equipment to provide teaching conditions, but the public network slipped a little and depends on investment”.
