44% of Brazilian businessmen are optimistic about Christmas sales, survey shows

Optimism for Christmas sales in 2022 reaches 44% of entrepreneurs, according to data from the Boa Vista survey provided exclusively to CNN Brasil.

The interviewed companies believe in an increase in sales for the date this year, compared to last year, when 41% were optimistic. Already 31% are pessimistic and believe in a drop in sales, while the remaining 25% expect the same sales. In 2021, 41% were optimistic, 22% expected sales equal to the previous year and 37% expected lower sales.

For the majority of respondents (25%), Christmas and New Year’s sales represent 5% to 10% of total annual revenue.

′′ This expectation of high sales compared to the last year is largely due to the fact that the comparison base (Christmas 2021) is weaker. However, the share of businessmen who believe in a drop in sales is also considerable, since Christmas this year follows not only Black Friday, which was weaker, but also the World Cup. We have seen consumers who are more cautious and less confident, in addition to the fact that household defaults and income commitments are on the rise, which could jeopardize sales in the period”, says Flavio Calife, economist at Boa Vista.

Christmas 2022 should not promote a large opening of vacancies in the work market. That’s because only 31% of entrepreneurs, about three out of ten, intend to make new hires due to the commemorative date. However, the numbers represent an increase compared to 2021, when 21% of respondents intended to hire new employees for Christmas.

As for the strategies adopted by entrepreneurs to increase sales this Christmas, the main bet pointed out by the interviewees will be internet sales. / Next, the adopted strategy will be to carry out sales campaigns on social networks and, thirdly, to offer discounts.

Despite the strategy of selling online, the majority of entrepreneurs, 61%, believe that most sales will be made in their physical stores, while 39% believe that they will be on the internet. For the companies heard by Boa Vista, the sectors that will most move the economy with Christmas and year-end sales will be: food and beverages, clothing and footwear and electronics.

The products most sought after by consumers to present someone this Christmas will be, in the companies’ view, electronics, with 29%. For another 25%, it will be clothing and footwear products. Telephony products come in third at 17%. Toys, for 12%; leisure and travel/tours, for 7%, perfumery, 6%, and 4% think that other types of products will be the most sought after.

Entrepreneurs expect the amount spent to be, on average, R$ 275.00. 47% of entrepreneurs think that the consumer will spend more than last year’s Christmas. 20% believe that spending will be the same, and 32% believe that consumers will spend less at Christmas 2022.

The means of payment most offered to consumers by entrepreneurs this Christmas will be, in that order: Pix, credit card, cash, debit card and bank transfer.

The survey also pointed out that 35% of entrepreneurs will depend on credit for the development of actions that leverage sales this Christmas. 67% will resort to bank credit lines.
