48-year-old man shot and killed in New York subway

A 48-year-old man died after being shot in the chest on a New York City subway train early Sunday morning, the New York Police Department told AFP. CNN .

The victim was seated in the last car of a train on the “Q” line bound for Manhattan, department chief Kenneth Corey said at a press conference Sunday afternoon.

Officers responded to a call of a person shot at the Canal Street station in Lower Manhattan at approximately 11:42 am (local time) and upon arrival found the 48-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the torso.

Rescuers provided relief and transported him to Bellevue Hospital, where he died from his injuries, Corey said. The victim has not yet been identified.

The victim was shot in the chest at some point as the train car traveled on the Manhattan Bridge from the last stop in Brooklyn to Canal Street, according to an official.

Members of the NYPD rode the “Q” train to patrol three times before the shooting on Sunday, the official said. The suspect in the shooting, who fled the train when it arrived at Canal St. station, remains at large and no arrests have yet been made.

Corey described the suspect as a “dark-skinned man who is burly with a beard” who was last seen wearing a dark-colored hoodie, gray sweatpants, and white sneakers.

Although there were other people in the same car, the 48-year-old was the only person injured, Corey said, adding that authorities are still working to notify the man’s family of his death.

Witnesses told NYPD investigators that the shooting suspect was pacing the same car and “without provocation, pulled out a gun and shot the victim at point-blank range as the train crossed the Manhattan Bridge.” ,” Corey said.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance video and witnesses are being interviewed, but Corey urged the public to call the police department with any relevant information.

The gunman and victim had no interaction on the train prior to the shooting, and there appeared to be no dispute, an official familiar with the investigation told CNN .

When the doors opened on Canal Street, the gunman ran out of the subway car and out of the station, the official said.

CNN reached out to the office of New York Mayor Eric Adams for comment.
