4th dose for the general population is not on the agenda, says vice president of SBI

The doctor Alexandre Naime Barbosa, vice president of the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases (SBI) and professor at Unesp, said in an interview with CNN this Saturday (5) that there is no evidence about the results of the fourth dose of the vaccine against Covid-19 for the general population and that the matter is not being discussed in the scientific community.

“What is being discussed is the fourth dose for the most vulnerable population. The fourth dose is not on the agenda for the general population that does not have evident immunosupersence factors”, he points out.

The vice president of SBI said that giving the fourth dose to people who are not immunosuppressed is still a big question in terms of scientific results.

He explains that studies are still in progress and are aimed at immunosuppressed people, but some countries such as Israel and Chile have already put this into practice. The same happens in the city of Botucatu (SP), which will vaccinate elderly people over 70 years old who have received the last booster dose four months ago.

“Obviously, more studies are needed to show the need for the fourth dose of the vaccine”, evaluates Barbosa.

The Ministry of Health confirmed in December that immunosuppressed people will receive the fourth dose of the Covid-19 vaccine in Brazil. And the state of São Paulo is evaluating the possibility of applying the fourth dose to the entire population.
