A 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck Los Angeles on Monday (12), according to the United States Geological Survey. The quake had an initial reported intensity of 4.7, but has since been revised to 4.4.
The earthquake was only 12 km deep and struck directly beneath the populated areas of Los Angeles. The tremor was likely felt widely despite its relatively modest intensity.
Earthquakes of magnitude 4 to 5 usually bring light shaking and no damage.
The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) also recorded an earthquake in Southern California on Monday (12), with a magnitude of 5.04.
Other recent earthquakes in the area include a magnitude 4.9 quake on July 29 near Barstow and a magnitude 5.2 temblor last Tuesday (6) near Bakersfield.
Monday’s tremor (12) left the Los Angeles Fire Department on alert, with teams at 106 stations conducting surveys in their districts.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage, the department said.
