5.6 magnitude earthquake shakes Iran

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake shook the Gulf of southern Iran early this morning, state television said. There is currently no information on casualties or damage.

The quake struck between the port of Sarak and the island of Keys and had a focal depth of 22 kilometers, Iranian state television added.

Officials told state television that there had been about 100 earthquakes and aftershocks in the area over the past 10 days.

Earlier today, the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) announced that a magnitude 5.7 earthquake had shaken Iran and its epicenter was located in the region of southern Iran, with a focal depth of 8 kilometers.

There have been several catastrophic earthquakes in Iran in recent years.
