A magnitude 5.9 earthquake shook Papua New Guinea today, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The epicenter was reported at 12:05 a.m. (04:05 GMT) in the New Britain area, with a depth of 19 kilometers off the east coast of the country, according to the USGS.
Local authorities have not reported any casualties or damage as of this stage.
No tsunami alert was issued.
Papua New Guinea is located on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone where seismic and volcanic activity is intense due to the friction of tectonic plates.
In July 2020, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake shook the capital Port Moresby, but no major damage was reported.
In February 2018, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck the country’s highlands causing landslides that buried entire communities. At least 125 people lost their lives.
