In a period when it is practically impossible to meet friends and relatives, the perfect solution to celebrate an anniversary can be a themed movie night. So, this year, for Father’s Day, organize yourself with a pc or smart TV, various appetizers, choose a film that talks about the father – daughter / son relationship and then comment on it with him: maybe, it can be an opportunity to understand each other better or to remember all the good times we lived together.
If you don’t know where to start, we propose five films for the occasion.
BEAUTIFUL BOY di Felix Van Groeningen
When I saw this film I cried a lot: get ready because emotionally it is quite demanding. On the one hand there is David Sheff (Steve Carell), an affectionate, present and caring father on the other Thread (Timothée Chalamet), his son who struggles with drug addiction. It is obvious that a similar situation will undermine their relationship, but above all the choices of David as a father. Beautiful and poignant.
SOMEWHERE by Sofia Coppola
What is it like to have a very famous actor like dad? The film revolves around this question Sofia Coppola which is freely inspired by the relationship with his father Francis who, as a director, made the history of cinema. But, in addition to the glamor, Cleo (a very young Elle Fanning) discovers what it means to live together and accept all the enormous defects of one’s parent (Stephen Dorff). After all, it is something that we daughters, sooner or later, will inevitably experience: to understand that our father is not the infallible superhero we believed, but to continue to love him even more than before.
ABOUT TIME di Richard Curtis
Although it may seem that the supporting arc of the film is the love story between Tim (Domhnall Gleeson) e Mary (Rachel McAdams), in truth the real engine of everything is the father of Tim (Bill Nighy). Not only does he reveal to his son that the men in the family have the ability to travel through time, but also how to make the most of this power. His wise advice will guide him, then, in his every choice. Just like it happens in real life, when we are in trouble a well-settled word from our father and everything makes sense again.
CHEF di Jon Favreau
If you love cooking (or miss the episodes of MasterChef, you see), this movie is perfect. Carl Casper (Jon favreau) is a highly rated chef who, due to a negative review from a prominent food critic, loses his job. Obviously the world collapses on him, but he decides to leave thanks to the help of his son Percy (Emjay Anthony): opens a food truck e Percy takes care of promoting it on social media and making it trendy. The rediscovered relationship, the perfect fit between father and son remind us that, many times, our most precious ally is in the family.
LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE di Jonathan Dayton e Valerie Faris
In this film we see the father-son relationship dissected from two points of view: that of Richard (Greg Kinnear) with his father Edwin (Alan Arkin) and then with his daughter Olive (Abigail Breslin). The Hoovers are the most dysfunctional family in the world, but the journey that leads them to the beauty pageant for girls Olive was written to will help them understand a great deal about their relationship. It is a melancholy film that, however, teaches fathers that the best way to raise their children is to let them be free to be as they want. Prepare the handkerchiefs, please.
