5 million mini-LED laptops expected to ship in 2022

Apple recently introduced a new line of MacBook Pro laptops that use mini-LED display backlighting technology. With this move, TrendForce predicts Apple’s annual shipments of laptops equipped with mini-LED backlit displays will reach 5 million units in 2022. This forecast is in line with an increase of 213% over the current year.

5 million mini-LED laptops expected to ship in 2022

Analysts note that Samsung’s aggressive efforts to gain market share in the notebook PC market with OLED displays this year will result in 2.5–2.7 million of these notebooks being shipped in a year. This figure corresponds to a penetration rate of 1.1%. OLED displays compete directly with mini-LED displays in the high-performance laptop market. This means that the use of mini-LED displays by laptop manufacturers other than Apple is limited. In addition, the new Apple MacBook Pro models did not ship until the fourth quarter. Taking these factors into account, TrendForce has revised its 2021 mini-LED backlit notebook shipments forecast from 2.4 million to 1.65 million units.

Along with the wider adoption of mini-LED technology in Apple products, it is expected that many new entrants will enter the supply chain in 2022, which in turn will make this technology much more cost-effective.
