5 SAGAS TO (RE) READ DURING HOLIDAYS

Ah, what a beautiful Christmas holiday: sofa, cover, steaming cup in hand and, why not, even a good book. More and more often, among the hobbies that come back to life during breaks, there is reading. I admit, I am one of those who take at least 5 different books to the sea, because I have to make up for all the time lost during the year (on winter evenings I am too sleepy and on the third page I have already collapsed). But in the weeks leading up to the Epiphany I transform myself. I enjoy the warmth of my home and, instead of going out to buy new ones, I take refuge among those that I already jealously guard in my library. Even if I know plots and characters by heart, I always manage to catch some details that maybe I had missed in the past. If you, like me, love the sagas (there is more pleasure in binge reading, on) then here it is 5 to (re) read during this Christmas break:

HARRY POTTER

The problem with seeing him on television is that I then (re) think of all those key elements of the books that are missing in the movies (like Dumbledore’s funeral – cough cough – but that’s not all). If you are like me too, then get ready to relive all the magic of JK Rowling’s saga, re-read the 7 Harry Potter books and spend your holidays at Hogwarts. Whataa? Have you never read them? Get them back, really. It’s worth it. Anyone who grew up with the wizard with the lightning bolt scar, knows it: his is a story that goes far beyond witchcraft and spells. When you get to the final chapter, underline this sentence, it will be useful to you in life: “Don’t pity the dead, Harry. Feel pity for the living and, above all, for those who live without love».

THE BRILLIANT FRIEND

Filming for the next season of the Rai-HBO series is underway in these weeks, between Naples and Florence. The brilliant friend, therefore, will officially return in 2021. Are you ready to see Lila and Lenù on the small screen? While waiting, throw yourself headlong into the splendid tetralogy written by Elena Ferrante. Through the pages of his books you will relive all the most intense moments of their relationship. In case you don’t know it, know that this saga follows the adventures of two little girls, then teenagers and finally adults who are very different from each other, united not only by a strong friendship but also by the courage not to be defined by others. Two strong, rebellious women who love and who make mistakes, whose bond can be summarized as follows: “We became fragments of voice for each other, without ever any verification of the gaze.”

HUNGER GAMES

Among the few joys of this 2020, there is the prequel of Hunger Games, released in Italy last summer: Ballad of the Nightingale and the Serpent is the book by Suzanne Collins that tells the story of a very young Coriolanus Snow, the despotic future president of Panem, the one who – in every possible and unimaginable way – tried to get rid of our beloved Katniss Everdeen, the impersonator jay. Here, before taking a dip in the past, why not re-read the trilogy? I’m not too much a fan of dystopian novels, but this saga has a special place in my heart as a reader. Partly because I imagined the protagonist just like Jennifer Lawrence, who interpreted her beautifully in the cinema and partly because, in the end, the one who is not afraid to sacrifice her life for others continues to live. : “It is not in my nature to give in without a fight, even when the difficulties seem insurmountable.”

TWILIGHT️

Let’s face it, come on: we’ve all been waiting for it for years. Long last, a few months ago, Midnight Sun, the novel by Stephenie Meyer that takes up the events of Twilight, the first book of the homonymous saga, was released, telling them from the point of view of Edward Cullen (instead of that of Bella Swan, original protagonist and narrator). Result? Even if we are no longer 14 years old and today we lie to everyone saying that we have never read it and that we can’t stand either the film adaptation or the acting of Kristen Stewart, well, we liked it. But before you pick up the story, savor all 4 books again: for the cheesy phrases, for his charm, and for the insufferable Jacob Black (only Taylor Lautner could do him justice in the movies). In short, to relive the fantastic love story between the human and the vampire, remove some dust from that shelf and start like this, “with the lion who fell in love with the lamb”.

A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS

Yep, that’s it. Let’s change gender, because the saga written by Lemony Snicket (pseudonym of Daniel Handler) is halfway between drama, comedy and mystery. The books, in all, are 14 (fear not, they are quite short): from the first three the homonymous film with Jim Carrey was made, and subsequently, the series produced by Netflix. If you’ve never read them, do it: because the adventures of the three Baudelaire orphans, persecuted by their guardian, the terrible Count Olaf – who wants to steal their parents’ inheritance – go beyond all imagination and will always manage to make you smile. . Together with them, you will find yourself experiencing a series of unfortunate events and learning from those who, even in misfortune, are able to always draw the best for themselves and for others (and make it a treasure of inestimable value). Also because “fate is like a strange little popular restaurant, full of bizarre waiters who bring you things you haven’t asked for and you don’t always like”.
