5 Second of Summer: “Our next album will be the best”

When did you start playing together?
Michael: “We started in 2011. We all already played on our own when we were in high school but officially as a 2011 band.”

How did your parents’ musical tastes influence yours?
Luke: «Well my dad listened to a lot of Australian classic rock like ACDC or Midnight Oil and they certainly were among my first plays and influences».
Michael: «My dad was a huge Rolling Stones fan and he always encouraged me to play guitar like Ronnie Wood. Listening to them at home every day he fed in me the idea of ​​becoming a guitarist and maybe one day playing my music in front of a big audience, maybe in a stadium exactly like them ».

Was there ever an “unexpected” musician who broke into your training as a musician?
Luke: “Unexpected musician … I’d say Michael Hutchence from INXS when I was 12”.
Michael: «Let me think, I would say Slash and then, wait, I’ll give you another one … James Hetfield of Metallica! Because I’ve always loved Metallica ».

What is your album you are most fond of?
Luke: «Definitely the last one, we just released” COPLETED MESS “. which can give you an idea of ​​what the rest of the album will be, which by the way doesn’t even have a name yet. We call it the “fifth disc”. Apart from that, I think our first album was a good job ».

What do you miss most about live shows?
Luke: «I think live shows are very useful for the band to create connection between the various components but nothing comparable to what the audience who comes to see you can give you. The energy of the people and the different cultures found in a single event. We miss this very much. And then I miss some locations where we played, the stands and the elevators (laughs) ».
Michael: «Right, I miss the elevators a lot too, but also the stairs (laughs). And I also miss the planes for our tours ».

What is your relationship with the Italian public?
Michael: «For us Italy is truly a very special country, for several reasons. It is the first country we came to play in Europe and it was the first country where we presented our first album, in the incredible setting of Piazza Duomo in Milan full of fans in the summer of 2014. 5SOS are and will be always very grateful to their Italian audience. We have repeatedly asked our entourage to be able to do a one-month tour only in Italy. Would be a dream”.
