“1899”

  • Platform: Netflix.
  • Release date: September 13th.
  • Release format: the whole season at once (8 episodes).
  • Genre: Mystery, Detective, Horror.

A German mystical horror series that could easily be missed due to the lack of an extensive promotional campaign, but nonetheless quickly earned itself the status of one of the most anticipated fall releases on Netflix. 1899 was developed by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, creators of the sci-fi hit Darkness (it was Netflix’s first German original, by the way). The action will take place in 1899, when a group of immigrants of various origins, during a sea crossing from Europe to America, notices a drifting ship, which went missing several months ago. Boarding an abandoned ship, the travelers find themselves in a nightmare. The series was filmed in a “virtual studio” using LED-Volume technology based on the Unreal Engine game engine. This filming technology was used, for example, in the TV series The Mandalorian.

He has to go from rejecting the resistance to becoming one of its leaders. In addition to the Moon, Stellan Skarsgård, Fiona Shaw, Forest Whitaker and many other stars can be seen on the screen.

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities

  • Platform: Netflix.
  • Release date: October 25th.

Guillermo del Toro is certainly one of the best contemporary filmmakers, especially when it comes to mysticism, grotesque fantasy and stuff like that. On his account are both big-budget action films (Hellboy, Blade 2) and festival works (Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water, for which he received two Oscars). Now he has selected a few stories by Howard Lovecraft, Michael Shea and other masters of mystical horror and turned them into episodes of his anthology. Two of the eight episodes, by the way, are based on original del Toro stories. Each episode was directed by different directors, including Guillermo Navarro (Hannibal series), Panos Cosmatos (Mandy), Vincenzo Natali (Cube), Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) and so on. Guillermo del Toro was able to bring such a project to life thanks to the streaming service Netflix.
