5 things to know if you’re finishing high school

It’s been a while since my graduation exam, but I have not forgotten the feelings you feel during the last weeks of high school, halfway between the fear of closing a chapter of your life forever and the euphoria of starting to write a new one.

Here are some things I wish I had known about that time, and which I hope will help you.

You will put everything back into perspective:
Everything that happens in high school is an irremediable tragedy in your eyes: the Latin test gone wrong, the missed invitation to a party, the math teacher who seems to hate you. Not to mention that the one you like doesn’t even look at you

I give you great news: when you finish school, these things will stop mattering, no matter how bad they have made you feel.

Your friendships will change:
In recent years, you have shared so many experiences – first loves, failed interrogations, secretly smoked cigarettes during recess – that it seems impossible to believe that you and your friends will lose sight of each other. But instead… well, the chances of it happening are pretty high.

School ends and paths divide, horizons broaden, lifestyles change and we change too. It is inevitable that some friendships will be lost, but you have nothing to fear: the real ones will be able to resist change, and many others will be born along the way.

How adult friendships change

Things that scare me about adult life

Some things you will miss:
Even if you can’t wait to graduate, I can assure you that you will miss school. You will not regret teachers and tests, I know this well, but you will think back with great nostalgia to the emotion of the first few times that you can try only among the desks, and to the lightheartedness of those who have not yet come to terms with university, work, bills, rent and all the other flaws of life as an adult. Don’t worry though: being an adult isn’t terrifying after all …

You will have to learn to manage yourself:
At this moment, the power you can exert over your time and life is quite small: a bell tells you when to enter, when to have recreation, when to leave; teachers determine what you need to study; your parents tell you what you can and what you can’t do. After graduation, you will discover the joys (and also the pains, let’s face it) of being the only person to decide for you.

5 things that make you understand that you have become an adult

It is normal not to know what will happen:
Do you have the impression that everyone * knows which direction to take, while you can’t even decide which pizza to order for dinner? Stop making comparisons and fall into the trap of inadequacy! Nobody really knows what will happen after the last bell, not even those who are convinced they have clear ideas. The fact is, once you cross the threshold of the school for the last time, you will discover that life does a little bit what it likes. It is a frightening prospect, I realize, but also liberating: if things never go according to plan, we might as well throw ourselves, right?
