53% of Americans in favor of supporting Ukrainians until Russian troops withdraw

After half a year of war in Ukraine, a narrow majority of Americans agree that the United States should continue to support Kyiv until Russia withdraws all its forces, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released today.

The survey shows that Americans, despite the economic concerns and internal political developments that have caught their attention in recent months, continue to support President Joe Biden’s policy of supporting Ukraine.

The Biden administration has provided weapons and ammunition to Ukraine to help it repel Russian forces and is expected to announce a new security aid package of about $3 billion, a US official said, as Ukraine celebrates Independence Day today. Her independence.

Among 1,005 people in the United States who took part in last week’s online poll, 53% favored supporting Ukraine “until all Russian forces withdraw from territories claimed by Ukraine.” Only 18% said they were opposed to it.

That support comes from both sides of the political spectrum, though Democratic voters were more likely to support the position, with 66% of Democrats supporting it compared to 51% of Republicans.

A small majority, 51%, also support providing weapons, such as guns and anti-tank weapons, to the Ukrainian armed forces, compared to 22% who are opposed.

In previous polls, percentages of Americans in favor of supplying arms to Ukraine have been higher, but no directly comparable polls are available.

As in previous polls, support for sending US troops to Ukraine is low among Americans across the political spectrum. Only 26% said they supported such an intervention, but 43% agreed with sending US troops to NATO allies who are neighbors of Ukraine and not at war with Russia.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
