The thermometers in the city of Mohe, in the far north of China, marked -53°C last Sunday (22). According to Chinese state media, this temperature – recorded around 7 am (local time) – was the lowest in the history of the municipality.
It was so cold there that a journalist from CCTV, China’s public broadcaster, managed to capture the moment when an egg freezes – in a few seconds – when it is broken on top of a shovel. See the video:
Mohe is in the border region of China and Russia and had not registered such intense cold since 1969, when the thermometers marked -52.3°C.
Despite the very low temperature, this was not the lowest ever recorded in the Asian country. According to state media, the negative record belongs to the city of Genhe, in the region of Inner Mongolia, where thermometers already reached -58°C in 2009.
