5G coverage in cities that received technology exceeds government expectations

The spread of fifth-generation (5G) mobile internet coverage is evolving faster than authorities expected.

The signal has already started to be activated in five capitals and, in all locations, operators installed more antennas than required by the rules of the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel).

The balance was made last Thursday (10th) by the Minister of Communications, Fábio Faria, during the 5G.BR Seminar, organized by the ministry itself to publicize the positive results to an audience made up of entrepreneurs from the telecommunications sector in a hotel in South Zone of São Paulo.

“Operators are going much further (in the installation of antennas) than what was mandatory in the frequency auction”, said the minister, in a press conference.

The best example is the city of São Paulo, which should receive around 370 antennas by the end of this year, but already has 1,500 points installed or in the installation phase.

“To cover all of São Paulo, 3,200 antennas will be needed. So, this year alone we will have half of São Paulo connected”, he highlighted.

A similar situation is seen in other capitals where 5G has already started to be activated, according to a balance sheet presented by Minister Fábio Faria. In Brasília, the goal was 93 antennas, but the number has already reached 333.

In Belo Horizonte, there are already 158 antennas, while the minimum was 78. In Porto Alegre, there are 111 compared to 45. And in João Pessoa, 51 compared to 27.

“The diffusion of 5G in Brazil, through the efforts of operators, has been above expectations”, said the president of Claro Brasil, José Félix, who also participated in the event.

“This makes us believe that all the (coverage) targets will be achieved before 2029 if we continue at this pace, which I hope will happen”, he added, referring to Anatel’s schedule for activating the antennas, which starts in the capitals and ends in extends inland.

Equipment

With coverage growing rapidly, sales of network equipment for 5G are likely to exceed orders for 4G in Brazil from next year. The estimate is from Ericsson’s president in Latin America, Rodrigo Diestmman.

“We are prepared to sell more 5G than 4G from 2023 onwards. Today, 5G already represents 25% of our sales”, said the executive. Ericsson has contracts with Vivo, TIM and Claro. The information is from the newspaper. The State of São Paulo.
