An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale left “more than 40 injured, three of them seriously” on its north coast. Peru, also causing damage to dozens of homes, authorities said.
The quake was recorded at 12:10 local time (20:10 Greek time) and its epicenter was located 12km west of the city of Soulana, near the border with Ecuador and with a focal depth of 36km, according to the National Geophysical Institute.
“The 6.1 magnitude earthquake left more than 40 people injured, three of them seriously, so far”, said Jose Nizama, director of health of the city of Piura, according to state news Antina.
According to the Civil Protection Service, about 187 houses and at least four temples were damaged by the earthquake.
The facade of the cathedral in the city of Piura, which was built in 1588 and is a historic monument, was slightly damaged, Antina said.
Pedro Castillo, who took office as president on Wednesday, traveled with Prime Minister Guido Begido to the region to mobilize aid in the two cities hardest hit by the quake, Sulana and Piura.
“For a start, we are helping to coordinate immediate action that the population of the northern part of the country may need. “Our priority is to preserve the physical integrity of all citizens,” the new head of state wrote on twitter.
The Navy’s Hydrography and Navigation Division ruled out any tsunami risk.
Peru, located on the so-called “Fiery Crown of the Pacific” or “Ring of Fire” each year experiences about 100 earthquakes that are felt by the people of the country.
