6.47 million new energy vehicles (NEV) sold in 2021, according to TrendForce

In 2021, total sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs, including battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles) reached 6.473 million units. Annual growth reached 122%, which is the highest rate since the start of vehicle electrification. Such data are given in the report prepared by specialists of TrendForce analytical company. Based on their calculations, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for approximately 71.6% of total sales and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) for approximately 28.1%, meaning fuel cell vehicle sales remained low.

The first place in the BEV segment was taken by Tesla with total worldwide sales of more than 930,000 units and a market share of 20.2%. Second place was taken by SAIC-GM-Wuling, taking advantage of strong demand for low-cost mini electric vehicles. Other brands, such as Ora and Chery, also saw significant sales gains with mini electric vehicles. TrendForce experts note that the share of the top ten BEV brands has decreased from 64.4% in 2020 to 57% in 2022, indicating increased competition. BYD took first place in the PHEV segment. It has sold 273,000 electric vehicles, representing 15% of the market. The top ten figures in both segments are shown in the table:
