6.6 Magnitude Earthquake In Turkey Jolts the Region

A 6.6  magnitude earthquake in Turkey and Greece has jolted the region. Buildings collapsed and people rushed onto the streets as the earth in Turkey and parts of Greece rattled.

The earthquake originated in the province of  Izmir in Turkey. At least 4 people have lost their lives and 120 have been injured. According to the Mayor of Izmir, 20 buildings collapsed as a result of the earth quake.

According to Turkey, the magnitude of the earth quake was 6.6 while the U.S Geological Survey reports that the magnitude was 7.0.

The Greek town of Néon Karlovásion on the island of Somos and the island of Krete also felt the tremors, however there have been no reports of any damage there as of yet.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish President tweeted ‘Get well soon, Izmir’. It has been reported that some citizens are still stuck in the rubble of the collapsed buildings.

The two countries sit on active geological fault lines and earth quakes are common in the part of the world where they’re situated. In 1999, a powerful earthquake in Turkey had killed 17,000 people.
