The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control, in the United States, has issued its first license that authorizes someone to have a unicorn.
Madeline, a 6-year-old local child, wrote a letter to the department requesting official approval for her to own a unicorn – if she could find one.
In a handwritten letter posted on the department’s Facebook page, she wrote: “Dear LA County, I would like your approval if I can have a unicorn in my backyard, if I can find one. Please send a letter in response.”
The department praised Madeline’s commitment to “responsible pet ownership” in a Facebook post.

“It is always gratifying to hear from young people carefully considering the requirements for providing a loving home for animals,” wrote the department, which omitted Madeline’s last name.
Madeline received a “pre-approved unicorn license”, which was also attached to the Facebook post.
There are conditions, of course. The license letter specifies that Madeline must give her pet unicorn “regular access to sunlight, moonbeams and rainbows,” that it must be fed a watermelon once a week, that its horn must be polished “by the least once a month with a soft cloth” and that “any glitter or glitter used on the unicorn must be non-toxic and biodegradable to ensure the good health of the unicorn”.
And since unicorns are notoriously hard to find in Los Angeles, the department went a step further and sent Madeline a stuffed unicorn – with a “permanent unicorn license” tag on the collar.
