The Civil Police of Rio Grande do Sul arrested this Wednesday (16) the mother of twins Antônia and Manoela Pereira, aged 6, who died within an interval of eight days in the city of Igrejinha (RS), located 90 kilometers from Porto Alegre.
The temporary arrest was ordered at least until the reports from the General Institute of Expertise (IGP) are released.
The case caught the attention of the Civil Police because of the way in which the children died, shortly after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest. On October 7th, Manoela fell ill while sleeping. She was taken to the hospital, but did not survive and died.
Last Tuesday (15), Antônia died in the same way, in the hospital, after suffering a seizure while sleeping.
According to the director of the Interior Police Department, Chief Cléber Lima, there were no signs of apparent violence on the children’s bodies.
On Tuesday, the twins’ mother was interviewed by the Civil Police and, according to the delegate, showed signs of psychiatric problems, which will be investigated.
The doctor who treated the twins on both days was also interviewed by the police.
The Municipal Council for the Rights of Children and Adolescents of Igrejinha (Comudica) stated that it had not received reports of mistreatment of the two children. “Nor did we receive information about the lack of action by the guardianship council or the network in monitoring this specific case that could lead to the opening of an investigation.”
“We became aware of the situation through the press and we will investigate whether there was, on the part of the guardianship council, a violation of the legal duty to protect infants, in accordance with the law, as we do not tolerate any violation of rights”, added the council.
