A 65-year-old pilgrim who was on his way to the city of Aparecida (SP) was run over and died on the Presidente Dutra highway last Tuesday night (8). He was in Pindamonhangaba (SP) when he was hit.
The accident happened around 11:55 pm at km 99, on the road towards Rio de Janeiro. The car that hit the pedestrian has not yet been identified. According to the Federal Highway Police (PRF), the victim was wearing dark clothes and walking at night, factors that, according to the corporation, may have contributed to the accident.
This is the second accident involving pilgrims in less than 24 hours. Earlier, also on Tuesday, a group of pilgrims was run over by a bus in Santa Isabel on the same highway. A 51-year-old man died and two other people were injured. The circumstances of both accidents will be investigated.
Recommendation for pilgrims
Due to the various risks related to low visibility at night on the highways, the PRF reinforced the recommendation to pilgrims not to undertake the pilgrimage at night.
However, the corporation highlights that, if groups choose to undertake the journey at night, the need to use reflective vests, flashlights, light or colored clothing and other items or equipment that assist in visualizing pedestrians is reinforced.
“Using reflective vests during the pilgrimage helps to be seen by drivers at such a distance that it is possible to see in advance who is walking on the shoulder of the road”, he informs.
