A 7.4 magnitude earthquake reached Drake’s passage between Cabo Horn and Antarctica, at a depth of 10 km on Friday (2), reported the United States Geological Service (USGS).
The National Disaster Prevention and Response Service reported that a coastal area of the Magalhães region in the far south of the country should be unoccupied due to the risk of tsunami.
Chilean President Gabriel Boric also appealed to the eviction of the region affected by social networks: “We are asking for the evacuation of the coast throughout the region of Magallanes.”
The head of state pointed out that all government resources will be made available to deal with any impact.
Videos on social networks showed people coming out calmly as Sirens sounded in the background. Chile’s hydrographic and oceanographic service estimated that the waves will reach bases in Antarctica and cities in the far south of Chile in the coming hours.
The Antarctic Institute of Chile (INAHC) informed Reuters that the foundations were being vacated.
