A 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit the center of Myanmar on Friday (28), according to the United States Geological Service (USGS).
The earthquake occurred 16 kilometers north to northwest of the city of Sagaing, around 12:50 pm local time, the USGS said.
A 6.4 secondary magnitude tremor reached the region about 12 minutes after the initial earthquake, according to USGS.
There was no immediate information about damage in Myanmar, a country that has been in civil war since 2021.
A Yangon resident, who did not want to be identified, told the CNN : “We feel the earthquake for about a minute and then we ran out of the building.”
“We saw other people running out of the buildings too. It was very sudden and very strong,” he added.
The tremors were felt to the capital of Thailand, Bangkok, where a journalist at CNN He reported frantic scenes in his apartment, with luminaires swinging back and forth as the residents ran to leave the building.
Another resident of the city of Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, who did not want to be identified either, said: “I felt for about ten seconds in my room, I realized that I could not be inside. So I ran to the street.”
On Chinese social networks, users said they could feel the earthquake in Yunnan provinces on the Myanmar border and Shaanxi.
A bridge that connects the Ava and Sagaing regions collapsed after the ftremores, according to a video shared on social networks.
The filming shows parts of the Sagaing Old Bridge after falling into the Irauádi River, which runs from north to south of the country.
Emergency meeting
Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand, a country neighboring Myanmar, is holding an emergency meeting after the earthquake.
Tremors were felt throughout Thailand, including the capital Bangkok and the city of Chiang Mai in the north, according to residents and the disaster agency of the country.
The Prime Minister was in Phuket’s city for a meeting at the time of the earthquake.
