Do you want to know the hair trends of 2023? We do too, so we reached out to some of our best hair stylist friends to tell us what to keep an eye out for.
The good news? Finding a haircut that you like could be really simple thanks to the wave of alphabetical haircuts that lies ahead. You may have heard of the “V” cut, in which the hair ends in a point, but the “C” and “U” cuts are about to become the most popular and offer a slightly softer than the heavier layered cuts, which have dominated the last couple of years.
As for animal-inspired cuts (see: wolf cut, butterfly cut, octopus cut, and jellyfish cut), they’ll continue to be popular, so let’s keep an eye out for what’s next. Meanwhile, they will become more and more personalized thanks to the ability to mix and match the preferred characteristics of each of them.
Hair will be shorter and shorter, according to Pinterest forecasts for 2023, bobs will be just hinted at, short braids and cut fringes. But for those who stick to their long hair, layered cuts, aka layers, remain a mood.
The juice? «Today there is no real trend. They come and go so quickly thanks to social media,” she explains Dom Seeley, celebrity hair stylist and international creative director of ColorWow, “The trend is born from everyone’s personal style,” he adds. Which means that for 2023 the attitude is valid everything.
Here are the 7 trends of 2023 not to be missed…
The “C” cut
“The ‘C’ cut is going to be a big hit,” says Dom. Simply put, it features a softer ‘U’ shape thanks to the length, layers and pieces that frame the face,” explains Dom. “It’s an evolution of the heavy cuts from the 70s and 90s that we’ve seen everywhere in 2022. It’s like the revival of The Rachel, but much softer and not as heavy in the face framing. So you get a more rounded cut.” and balanced hair that is fun to style and easy to style, but the hair has smoother shapes and curves, instead of the “V” cut where the hair ends up in points,” says Dom. Upside: It will make hair look thicker As for styling, “the soft, rounded curves will look great both styled and left to dry naturally,” adds Dom.
Matching the cuts: the hybrid style
«One of the trends of 2023 is that customers are starting to combine different cuts, for example by combining the front of one type of cut with the back of another (perhaps shorter in front and longer in the back), such as the reinterpretation of mullet and wolf cut », says Paul Percival, professional hairstylist and founder of Percy & Reed, «People almost have a do-it-yourself version of haircuts. There will be a real tendency to mix and match,” he adds. “We’re going to see a lot of ’70s and ’90s styles fused together, taking the best of both eras,” agrees Dom. “So you might see the shag or wolf cut transformed into the octopus cut hair cut or the mullet and the shag transformed into the shullet. Haircuts have evolved, taking the best bits of each cut and creating a hybrid version,” she adds.
Short cuts
«Short haircuts, in particular, will be very popular in 2023», confirms celebrity hairstylist Dionne Smith, «We will see many pixie cuts, short bobs, fringes and styles of this type. I believe the need for a fresh start and to hit the reset button after a rough couple of years will manifest itself in the desire to cut hair. Short cuts and bobs will be the most requested », she adds.
“Bobs are getting a lot shorter, expect to see a mini, boxy length,” agrees Paul. Other popular options include the French girl bob: “It will never go out of style because it’s classic and timeless, and it really turns heads,” says Dom. soft, like a 70s or 90s curtain fringe, and a copious amount of movement made easy by the inside layers – perfect for the on-trend cool girl,” she says. Or, if you can’t decide between a bob and a pixie, combine them both: «The Bixie it’s the best of both worlds,” says Dom. “It has all the texture and shape of a pixie, but with a more bob-like length and lots of texture that frames the face. It’s a great option for transitioning your pixie if you still want that cool edge but want to make it grow out. Or, if you already have some length, it’s a good middle ground,” he adds.
Well-groomed curls
“Wavy and curly hair already has incredible texture, so there isn’t a specific trend,” says Dom. However, Dionne advises tailoring the cut according to your hair goals, “whether it’s volume, balance, length or overall form”. «The best cut for those with curly or wavy hair is the one that offers the opportunity to work with the natural texture, such as the Deva Cut. This trend sees the stylist cutting dry afro hair, dry, with the curls trimmed section by section to allow the hair to fall out naturally,” he says.
90s midi
Don’t like your hair too long or too short? The 90s midi cut is the perfect in-between: “The easiest way to update a midi cut is to add layers and texture inside,” says Dom. lots of movement that allows it to be more voluminous and fluffy. We will see an update of the 90s style, with a layering of wavy hair, but always long so as to exploit the weight and not lose the overall style,” says Dom.
But to achieve that 90s blow-out aesthetic, it’s going to need some styling: “As a general rule, all lengths below or equal to shoulder length are styled, so with a simple hair wash and a air dry you will have a cool look. All the longer lengths the shoulders must be styled. It should be cut well enough to wash and dry naturally, because a nice cut should give you versatility. But with longer lengths, you usually need to style them to maximize the cut, so equip yourself with dye, brushes and curling or straightening irons to create the style you want. The cut will do most of the work, but some styling is needed to get the most out of your final look,” says Dom.
Layers
You didn’t think we’d forget about the layers, did you? They remain the biggest hair trend of the moment, encompassing dozens of hairstyles that are all the rage, including the butterfly cut (which will remain popular), the wolf cut and variations of the shag and mullet. Plus, you can tailor them to you and your style, whether it’s more minimal and understated (looking at you, invisible layers), grunge and chopped (all things shaggy), elegant and sliced (like Rachel’s 90s layers) , or gauzy and bulky (like the 70s movies that are still everywhere).
Curtain fringe
The curtain fringe not he will abandon us. Just like 2022, it’s set to be all the rage in 2023. As for how to get it, “it should start midway between the eyebrows and the bridge of the nose, but it’s longer on the sides,” says Dom. A depending on the heaviness of the cut, it can feel ultra-flattened or barely present, and re-enter the rest of the hair when lifted, or pulled forward. «She has a fluid atmosphere. It’s not about solid bangs or bangs, but neither is it face-framing bangs. It’s somewhere in between and suits most hair lengths,” says Dom. “There are so many options for people with long hair when it comes to cuts,” agrees Dionne. “If you don’t want to take the plunge with a short cut, you can add wispy bangs to your long or mid-length hair,” she says.
