Since the holiday on November 15th, the southern region of the country has witnessed large volumes of rain. In Rio Grande do Sul, these events resulted in the deaths of five people. According to the state’s Civil Defense, the storms left 305,000 affected, 24,065 homeless, 3,847 people in public shelters and 190 municipalities reporting damage.
Lieutenant Sabrina Ribas, from Rio Grande do Sul Civil Defense communications, compares the September floods with the current one: “this time, the impact was much smaller because the rise was slower and allowed everyone to organize themselves”.
“Civil Defense managed to inform city halls to adopt their contingency plans and the planned prevention measures: inform and remove people from risk areas.”
The population learns about Civil Defense alerts through social networks and applications. “Today, we have an alert distribution service for the population by message, but only 7% of the population of Rio Grande do Sul is registered”, reports the lieutenant.
Based on the alert, Civil Defense advises people to adopt preventive and safety behavior. “We also had the death of a person who tried to cross the water in his vehicle, ended up being dragged away and could not resist. This is recurring, it is important to warn people not to put themselves at risk.”
“If people are surprised, we advise them to call the services of response forces, such as the Military Police and Firefighters”, he informs.
