The same report points out that the World Health Organization is still waiting for “province-by-province details” on the 60,000 deaths related to Covid-19 announced by Beijing last Saturday but not included in the overall tally. This figure was exclusively for deaths of patients in hospitals.

The number of hospitalized patients with Covid-19 stood at 63,307 in the week of January 9-15, up 70% from the previous week, according to the World Health Organization report citing official data from Beijing. This is a record number of hospitalizations in a week since the beginning of the pandemic about three years ago.

In early December, Beijing decided to end its strict policy to deal with the pandemic – with frequent spot checks, travel restrictions and local lockdowns – following a wave of protests in late November. Since then there has been a surge in cases in the vast Asian country of 1.4 billion people.

The World Health Organization has criticized Beijing for systematically downplaying the spread of Covid-19 in China, demanding detailed data on the number of deaths, mortality rates and mutations of the virus.
