Son of a hairdresser and a milkman, Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner was born in Wallsend, in the northern suburbs of Newcastle upon Tyne, in England, the October 2, 1951. Before becoming a musician, he worked as a digger but also as a teacher of English and drawing, having attended a preparatory course.

It is thought that its stage name was born while playing with the Jazzmen. At the time, he often wore a black and yellow striped t-shirt and one of the band members nicknamed him Sting (sting). There are those who say instead that to call him Sting were his students during his period as a teacher, considering him very severe. The artist usually calls himself Sting by everyone, including the six children: Joe e Kate, from the first marriage with Frances Tomelty; e quattro, the boys Jake and Giacomo, and the girls Eliot and Mickey, from the beloved Trudie Styler with which in 2022 he will celebrate the pearl wedding immersed in the Chianti hills, between yoga and tantric sex. Sting has sometimes ventured into acting; his most famous role is that of Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in the controversial adaptation of Dune (1984) by David Lynch.
