Seven out of ten Brazilians stopped buying items they normally consume in the month to be able to pay the light bill in 2022. The reason was the high price of electricity, which had an annual variation of approximately 6.5%.
The results are part of a survey carried out by the Brazilian Association of Energy Traders (Abraceel), which surveyed more than 2,000 people in 130 municipalities across the country. The confidence level of the survey is 95%.
Among the everyday items that Brazilians stopped buying to pay their electricity bill are clothing, services in general and non-essential food.
Abraceel’s research also showed that 44% stopped paying the electricity bill at some point this year, due to lack of financial conditions. And 83% of Brazilians say that electricity started to weigh more on the family budget in the last 12 months.
Finally, the study highlights that 85% of Brazilians admit to saving energy to reduce the monthly electricity bill.
“Electric energy is considered expensive or very expensive by most Brazilians: eight out of ten. And people attribute the high cost of the service mainly to taxes”, highlighted an excerpt from the Abraceel survey.
