76% dip in tourist arrivals in Spain in March

A decrease of 76% was recorded in March by foreign tourism in Spain compared to a year earlier when a lockdown was imposed in the middle of that month.

This emerges from the data released today, which means that the recovery of the critical sector from the COVID-19 blow is not yet visible.

Spain, the country with the second highest number of visitors before the pandemic, welcomed 490,088 foreign tourists in March, compared to more than 2 million in March 2020, according to the National Statistical Office (INE).

Compared to the pre-pandemic March 2019, the number has dropped by more than 90%, but was higher than the 284,000 tourists recorded in February, according to Reuters and the Athens News Agency.

Amid stricter travel restrictions with Britain, the French tourists replaced the British as the largest group of foreign visitors in Spain compared to a year earlier. More than 109,000 French people visited Spain in March, while only 18,000 Britons went to the country.

The number of foreign tourists visiting Spain in 2020 fell by more than 80% to levels that have been recorded for almost half a century due to travel restrictions imposed worldwide to stem the spread of the pandemic.
