“I wish all of us women to no longer feel uncomfortable in contexts where being a woman is still a problem.” Like institutions, politics, but also culture, work. Giusy Sica, indicated by Forbes as one of the 100 leaders of the future, made this wish one of her personal and professional battles.
Salernitana, founder of Re-Generation (Y)outh, the completely female-led think tank that in just three years of life has already achieved important milestones, in Italy and in Europe.
An experience that led Giusy Sica to the debate on Women’s Day Do you like the Covid version of yourself? organized by the European Parliament to bring attention to the condition of women, inside and outside the pandemic.
What is a think tank?
«It is not a cultural association but it is an organism that deals with connecting important issues, policies at an international level, with respect to those that are applications in the community. He also acts as a spokesperson for the latter’s requests ».
What does Re-Generation (Y) outh do?
«Our think tank does research and application. It was born three years ago, responding to a European call. We were ten women all under 30 from Campania and Basilicata, we wanted to overturn a little stereotypes, linked to our age and to the fact that we were all women and all from the South. Today the think tank has different projects, for example regarding innovation, we have created podcasts where we reasoned about innovation, connecting daily innovators and at the end of the first edition we discovered that many young people who did not know each other before carried out other projects together thanks to this experience ».
How did the pandemic affect your work?
“In the case of the think tank, during the hardest moment of the pandemic we stood a little bit stuck watching what was happening and we wondered how we could be useful. I would say that the pandemic has allowed us to recalibrate ourselves and think about the specific needs of the community that follows us. It allowed us to work with a different rhythm, which is a bit of a praise to slowness, to stop and pause, to listen to needs, demands ».
As a woman, what impact did it have on you?
“From a strictly personal point of view, as a woman, it was hard primarily due to the fact that I returned to my origins, in my case in the provinces because life in the city scared me a little. So I lived a more muffled period ».
This year you will again be engaged in the European Parliament as an Italian organization. What are the projects you are most attached to?
One is a report called Women in culture and aims to shed light on gender issues in the cultural sphere. Why don’t 70% of women graduates in humanities reach top positions? Why can’t the younger ones make it? ».
How do you answer these questions?
«We are working on a project that is very close to our hearts and is called Costituende. What we want to do, certainly in a somewhat provocative way, is to work over the next five years to have a 70% government made up of women and young women in strategic ministries, accompanied by mentors who will be able to follow them in their choices regarding the technical-political program. . It is truly unspeakable that in 75 years of the Republic the women ministers numbered at most two hands. It is urgent that we talk about it, that women reach certain positions as well as have a feminine vision of certain strategic ministries. It is a fundamental reversal in our country ».
