9 million tulips were planted for “Wicked”: see behind the scenes of the set

A new video released by Universal Pictures shows the behind the scenes of the construction of the Oz universe for the film “Wicked” — starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.

“We knew we wanted ‘Wicked’ to be immersive. What’s it like to be in Oz? To feel it at your fingertips,” said the film’s director, Jon M. Chu. “And if you want to feel like you’re in that world, you have to build it.”

More than 9 million tulips were planted and cultivated in the north of England, where the production was filmed, to create the gigantic tulip field that appears in the movie.

Additionally, the structure of the train that takes Grande and Erivo’s characters to the Wizard of Oz weighs about 16 tons, according to Chu.
