A nine-month-old baby has been confirmed to be among eight victims who were taken to hospitals following the mass stabbing at the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping center in Sydney, Australia.
New South Wales State Police Commissioner Karen Webb confirmed on Saturday that eight people are currently being treated for various injuries in hospitals around Sydney, including the child, who has undergone surgery.
Webb said “the last update I had was that (the baby) had undergone surgery and it’s too early to really say. But it’s horrible.”
At least six people were killed and several others injured, including a child, in a mass stabbing at a busy Sydney shopping center, Australian police said.
Authorities were called to Westfield Bondi Junction on Saturday afternoon local time following reports of several people being stabbed.
The suspect – who police said acted alone – was shot dead at the scene by a lone officer.
New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke said a senior female police inspector was nearby when the attack happened.
She arrived at the scene first and was alone when she got involved with the attacker. She shot her attacker when he raised a knife at her.
