90 + 30 recruitments are coming to OSE and 25 + 10 million for the immediate maintenance of the network

By Fotis Fotinos

OSE has two main problems: Lack of adequate funding for network maintenance and understaffing.

In both fields, there is some mobility, as actions are being launched to hire 120 employees at OSE and to channel 35-40 million euros for the immediate maintenance of the network.

Regarding the 120 recruitments, the announcement of which is expected in the next period, these will concern positions of locksmiths, stationmasters, engineers, train drivers, and other specialties.

Most of the positions (90) will be announced by OSE, after the publication of the relevant ministerial decisions and the remaining (30) through ASEP.

It is estimated that there may be a second cycle, but also some combined actions to strengthen the staff.

Now, these processes need to be accelerated, so that this human resource can come faster and with the right qualifications, to support the railway network that needs improvement.

It is obvious that the “key” to improving the competitiveness of the Greek railway is the network.

Increasing capacity and speeds (minimizing sluggishness) is the biggest “bet” for the infrastructure manager, OSE.

This increase will come through the adequate maintenance of the network and the completion of the signaling / remote control systems, which has exceeded the initial schedules.

The Agency for the immediate maintenance of the network is waiting for 25 million euros recently approved by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and a second installment of about 10-15 million euros.

It is noted that efforts are being made across Europe to strengthen rail transport in the context of achieving the EU’s environmental objectives.

In December 2020, the EU presented the “Strategy for Sustainable and Smart Mobility”, which includes an Action Plan of 82 initiatives.

For the industry in question and by 2030, high-speed rail traffic is estimated to double across Europe and by 2050 freight.
