A 16-year-old black woman was shot dead by police in Ohio

A 16-year-old girl was killed by police fire in Columbus, Ohio, minutes before the verdict in the Derek Sauvin trial for his murder was announced. George Floinτ.

The Columbus Dispatch reported that a crowd of protesters had gathered near a house in the southeastern part of the city where the incident took place, minutes before the jury announced its verdict in the trial for the murder of George Floyd in May 2020.

According to the newspaper, cited by AMPE, the police officers were sent to the area after being called to immediate action (number 911) for attempted stabbing by a suspect.

Columbus Mayor Andrew Gunther confirmed the incident, saying on Twitter that “a young woman lost her life tragically.”

The police officers who intervened were wearing cameras, which were operating. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) has taken over the case, the mayor added.

“We will share as much information as we can as soon as it is available,” the mayor promised via Twitter. “I urge residents to remain calm and allow the BCI to investigate.”

He did not provide details about the circumstances under which the young woman was killed. The Columbus Police Department has not commented on the case.

Family members reported that the girl who died was named Macaia Bryant and was 16 years old.

A woman named Hazel Bryant, who is the victim’s aunt, told Columbus Dispatch that the young woman lived in a juvenile detention center and was involved in a dispute with another person at the center.

The child’s aunt insisted that the teenage girl had already thrown down the knife she had on her before being repeatedly shot by a police officer, according to the online edition of the newspaper. This information could not be confirmed independently by Reuters.
