Participation in riots during the pro-democracy demonstrations that shook the Hong Kong in 2019 a 16-year-old confessed today.
The 16-year-old, who he was 14 years old when the events happened for which he is accused, he confessed that he fired Molotov cocktails in the direction of the police, as broadcast by AMPE.
The judge, who followed the recommendations of the penitentiary services, decided to send the boy to a closed center, which is an alternative for incarceration of young offenders.
The duration of his detention, which should last from one to six months, will be determined by the administration of the penitentiary services.
The 16-year-old, whose name was not disclosed for legal reasons, was arrested in November 2019 and was convicted of arson and involvement in riots. The teenager admitted to throwing a Molotov cocktail at police after being asked to do so by other protesters.
“The court must find the right balance between the interests of society and helping young offenders,” said Judge Ernest Lynn.
More than 10,000 people were arrested in connection with the massive demonstrations that rocked Hong Kong for six months in 2019. Of those, about 40% were students.
