A 19-year-old British-Belgian, Zara Rutherford wants to become the youngest woman to travel alone with aircraft to the world next month.
Rutherford begins its journey, which will cover a distance of 51,000 kilometers, with the superlight aircraft Shark, the fastest in the world, on August 11.
Once she completes her project she will be the youngest man to have flown such an aircraft in the world and the youngest woman to have flown alone around the world. The current record is held by Ceesta Wise, who completed her journey at the age of 30.
Rutherford hopes to pave the way for girls and women in science, technology and engineering and inspire others to follow in her footsteps.
«I wanted to fly around the world, for the girls to see me and think that at some point they would also like to fly“, The 19-year-old told Reuters.
“There is a difference in aviation between men and women. So my goal is to get closer to the records and then I hope to inspire other girls to try and break my record and then go and start competing with the boys».
Rutherford’s parents, Beatrice de Smet and Sam Rutherford, are both pilots, although her mother had mixed feelings when her daughter announced plans to take a year off from school.
«When he first told me about it, my heart skipped a beat. It took me a while to solidify it. And now I am so proud and fully support her“, He described.
The 19-year-old will finance her trip herself, with the help of sponsors, and hopes to complete it in about two to three months.
