A 33-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a 23-year-old pregnant woman – The case that shocked Ireland

A 33-year-old Slovakian man was sentenced today in Dublin to Life imprisonment for the murder of a young pregnant womanwhile she was jogging, a case that shocked the country in 2022. Jozef Puska, who arrived in Ireland around 10 years ago, was unanimously found guilty by a jury at Dublin Crown Court a week ago.

Ashling Murphy, a 23-year-old pregnant woman, was found dead in January 2022 on the banks of the canal in Tullamore (west Dublin), where she had gone jogging. The young woman he had been stabbed 11 times in the neck and a DNA sample collected from her fingernails belonged to that of Josef Puska. Added to the above item and video from security cameras, making the evidence against the accused “overwhelming”, according to the prosecution, however the 33-year-old man, father of five, declared his innocence at the start of his trial in Dublin, almost a month ago, as reported by APE-MPE.

Days after the murder, the Slovak national he had confessed to investigators that he had killed Murphy. Then, upon his arrest, he recanted, saying he did not remember that confession and “knew” nothing about the murder. He then claimed that a hooded man had attacked them and that he had tried to help the victim. However, Puska admitted he had lied to the police several times and the judge thanked the jury as they “didn’t waste any more time with his nonsense”.

Ashling Murphy’s murder shocked her Ireland and neighboring Great Britain, since several women had been murdered in public places in the previous months, including Londoner Sarah Everard by a police officer, who was sentenced to life in prison.
