Four men were brought in yesterday by the Portuguese authorities on the charge of forcing a man to live in slavery conditions for a whole 17 years, as announced by the country's criminal investigation department. The case was revealed in the region of Braganza, in the northeastern tip of the country. The police report said the 54-year-old had been subjected to physical and psychological abuse for nearly two decades and had been a victim of labor exploitation, including being “hired out” to third parties for agricultural work. The victim had learning difficulties and no family support. He was not paid for his work and his every move was monitored by the inmates, who were in possession of the 54-year-old's documents, according to authorities.
