A Biden-Xi conversation is possible within the week

US President Joe Biden said on Monday that he expects to hold talks with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping within the week, but is still awaiting confirmation.

Asked by reporters about the much-anticipated meeting between the two leaders, at a time when the House speaker’s possible visit to Taiwan is fueling tensions between Washington and Beijing, Mr. Biden replied that he “expects” how it will happen, ” but I am not aware when it will be organized” exactly.

Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House of Representatives, in her capacity as one of the top officials of the American state, is expected on the island next month, although she has not officially confirmed the trip.

Unusually, the US president himself noted last week that the US military considers the visit “not a good idea”.

The US administration is concerned that China will see no separation between the US legislative and executive branches, as Beijing sees Washington’s growing public support for Taipei as support for the island’s formal declaration of independence, which the Chinese leadership sees as its seceded province, destined to rejoin the metropolitan country in the future.

The row is intensifying as Mr Xi, China’s most powerful leader in decades, prepares to further consolidate his power at the Communist Party congress later this year.
