A positive case of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus has been detected on the French island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean, said PIMIT state microbiologist Patrick Mavingi.
This is the first confirmed case of Omicron in France. This coronavirus strain, first detected in southern Africa, has spread to many countries, from Canada to Italy, passing through Germany and Britain.
The patient who tested positive for Omicron is a “53-year-old man” who had traveled to Mozambique and “crossed South Africa” before returning to Reunion two weeks ago, Mavingi said.
The man, who has been quarantined as well as his close contacts, “suffers from myalgias and fatigue”, the scientist explained.
