A delegation of the US Congress met yesterday Saturday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, assuring him that he will try to ensure the continued support of the US to Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion.
Among the US officials in Kyiv was Adam Smith, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee.
“The United States, along with its allies and partners around the world, has stood by Ukraine by providing economic, military and humanitarian assistance,” the US delegation’s statement said. “We will continue to look for ways to support President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people as effectively as possible as they continue their brave resistance,” it added.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Wednesday that Washington would send four more multiple-launch missile systems to Ukraine, bringing to 16 the total number of HIMARS sent to date.
The American delegation made no specific reference on Saturday to transfers of weapons systems. Smith reportedly told US-backed Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty that Washington and its allies were ready to deliver more multiple-launch missile systems to Ukraine.
