A 'cosmic glitch' in the universe forces astronomers to rethink Einstein's theory of relativity

Over the past 100 years, countless studies have proven that Albert Einstein's greatest theory – the theory of relativity – is practically unshakable, capable of everything from predicting black holes to using GPS technology. However, as scientists equip themselves with more powerful and sophisticated technology capable of peering into the universe in unprecedented detail, they see phenomena they cannot explain based on Einstein's theory. Einstein's general theory of relativity states that the curvature of spacetime causes gravity. But observing at massive scales, such as galaxy clusters spanning billions of light-years, the laws of Einstein's theory of gravity appear to change. “It's almost as if gravity itself no longer fits perfectly with Einstein's theory,” said Robin Wen, a graduate student at the University of Waterloo.
