A 370,000 euro graffiti project was accidentally (not so much) destroyed by a couple in South Korea. The anonymous painting by artist JonOne, painted in 2016, was exhibited in a gallery at the Lotte World Mall in Seoul.
As part of the art installation, however, some boxes and brushes appear on the ground in front of the painting as part of the project. There was also a misunderstanding as according to the staff of the exhibition, the cameras arrested a young man and a woman, to take color from the boxes in front of them and spread them on the work.
Police checked the security video before arresting the couple at the mall but were later released.
The head of the exhibition, Kang Wook, stated that the gallery decided not to proceed with lawsuits as it seems to be a “partly logical” mistake on the part of the unfortunate couple. “They thought they were allowed to do that in the ‘participatory’ art, but they were wrong,” Wook said.
After the incident, the gallery was forced to put a barbed wire and additional signs in front of the project marked “Do not touch”. However, the incident was not so devastating for the gallery, as according to Wook, after the incident, the number of visitors to the gallery increased sharply.
