About 7,800 Berliners were forced to leave their homes today after the detection of a bomb of World War II in the eastern part of the German capital.
The bomb was discovered at a construction site in the Hohensenhausen district. It had dimensions of 60×30 centimeters and, according to experts, was of Soviet manufacture.
The operation involved 180 police officers, who carried out door-to-door checks to ensure the area was fully evacuated.. Appeals were also made through loudspeakers, but also via the internet.
Three schools were turned into emergency shelters, while the controlled detonation of the bomb was delayed in order to complete the evacuation of residents with mobility problems.
Nearly eight decades after the end of World War II, Berlin authorities estimate that there are still more than 4,500 unexploded bombs scattered around the city.
