Alexander Gintsburg, director of the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, told RIA Novosti that a drug is being created in Russia to suppress the multiplication of coronavirus. He noted that the center is working on such a drug, but it will appear later than an antibody-based drug for the treatment of COVID-19, the trials of which should begin as early as January next year.
Gunzburg said that the existing drugs, unfortunately, do not suppress the multiplication of the virus so well that they could be used to treat critically ill patients. A new drug is in development, but the results will not be soon, the scientist added.
In Russia, several drugs for the treatment of COVID-19 are already undergoing research. Among them – “MIR 19” developed by the Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA), which has passed the second phase of testing. In fact, it is an antidote against a virus, the action of which is based on the mechanism of suppressing gene expression.
